MISSION HILLS DRIVES SEARCH FOR NEXT CHINESE CHAMPION FALDO SERIES FIELD INSPIRED BY HISTORY-MAKER LUO

2013-06-19

13 June 2013: In March 2013, the Faldo Series crowned its first Chinese Champion when Luo Xue-Wen triumphed in the Asia Grand Final at Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen. On July 22-23, more than 100 golfers will head to the same venue for the eighth Faldo Series China Championship, all hoping to emulate the 17-year-old’s achievements.

“Our first Chinese Champion represents a significant next step in our worldwide effort to grow golf,” said Sir Nick Faldo, host of the annual Grand Final. “We also continue to celebrate the success of our past Chinese winner, Guan Tian-Lang, who is fast becoming a role model to an entire region of the world and young golfers with a dream worldwide. This is the foundation of the Series. I look forward to welcoming the China Championship winners back to Mission Hills next March."

“As home of the Faldo Series Asia, we share Sir Nick’s vision at Mission Hills and remain committed to helping grow golf in China,” added Tenniel Chu, Vice-Chairman of Mission Hills. “We hope that Faldo Series winners like Luo and Guan will inspire more young golfers to follow their dreams.”

Golfers aged 12 to 21 will compete over 36 holes for the China Championship title and a place in the eighth Asia Grand Final. Five age-group winners – three boys and two girls – will return to Mission Hills for the World Amateur Golf Ranking event next March.

Established in 1996, 40 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 30 countries worldwide with more than 7,000 golfers participating each year. Past winners include Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Tseng Yani.

In September 2014, Faldo will begin taking students at a full-time residential academy for education and golf development in America. The first ever Faldo Series Academy in Casa Grande, Arizona is also home to the Faldo Series USA and marks the next significant step in the programme’s history.

The 2013/2014 Faldo Series Asia schedule features a record 19 tournaments in 15 countries, including four in mainland China, two in India and others in The Philippines, Chinese Taipei, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, Brunei, Japan, Pakistan, Indonesia and Thailand.

The Faldo Series Asia is supported by The R&A, ISPS Handa and Mission Hills. It is endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Federation.
